Love Aaj Kal
While the title suggests a contemplation of modern romance, a thematic territory Kashyap sometimes brushes with in complex relationships, Imtiaz Ali's 'Love Aaj Kal' remains firmly rooted in a far more mainstream, idealized vision of love. Its polished narrative and saccharine emotional beats stand in stark contrast to the gritty, often morally ambiguous explorations of human connection that define Kashyap's work. The film's commercial appeal and glossy cinematography underscore a divergence from the raw, handheld aesthetic and socio-political undertones typical of the 'indie rebellion' movement Kashyap spearheaded. It's a sweet romance, well-executed for its genre, but far removed from the 'authentic Indian crime noir' or the 'non-conformist auteur voice' one associates with a list of Anurag Kashyap's finest.
